Sacramento’s Wurm Flesh is Comatose Music’s latest signing (at the writing of this review), and they are exactly what you would expect from Comatose Music in 2018/19; no frills, brutal death metal that sticks rigidly to the label’s formula and delivers the goods, nothing more, nothing less.
Samples? Check. Something awful happening to a naked chick on the on the cover? Check. Appropriate song titles like “Deceased and Festering”, “Enshrined in Rot”, and “House of Flesh”? Impressive drumming? Check? Super deep inhaled vocals? Check. Clinical but beefy production and guitar tone? Check and Check.
Starting with the standard intro, “Waltz of the Wurm”, then a minute long instrument number in “Deceased and Festering”, the album finally starts for real with “Enshrined in Rot” which shows off all the genre paradigms, but also that Wurm Flesh have a nice sense of Dying Fetus -y stomp n groove here and there, as does the title track and closer “Tombs in Which Gods Decay” . But the majority is pinch harmonic brutality like “House of Flesh”, “Unilateral Execution” and “Propagated Self Hatred Through Viral Media”. And at 25 minutes, there isn’t much fluff or filler.
Much like the label’s other 2018 releases by Aborted Fetus, Posthuman Abomination, Flesh Hoarder, Mass Infection and Corpsefucking Art, and almost all of the label’s other 104 other releases Wurm Flesh , isn’t bringing anything particularly new to the brutal death metal or Comatose table, but it’s an enjoyable example of the genre.
