It does not take a genius to figure out the style of metal played by Melbourne, Australia’s Whoretopsy; look at the moniker, the cover, the album title and song titles like “Cardiac Defecation”, “Potty Mouth”, “Necrobordello” and “Intimate Disgust”. What we have here brutal, ultra misogynistic death metal of the slammiest variety.
I’m pretty sure that sets the musical scene for most of you, but I’d like to address the lyrics here. While certainly full of the typical necrophilia, poop and depravity we’d expect from the genre, and certainly the easily offended could cry foul, but Whoretopsy add a truly depraved element of sick humor to their staple sound with each song telling the tale of a particular perversion. We are talking classic Autopsy and Pungent Stench levels here, from a sample of a pervert sniffing the asshole of his sick, bed ridden grandmother, to lyrics like “He surfs the internet, looking for a wife. Busty forty year old with no kids, non smoker. They meet up for dinner and drinks. She’s three hundred pounds. He feels repulsed but takes her coat. She starts to gorge on everything. Grease covers her face. Her floral blouse is ruined by gravy and oil. I haven’t felt the touch of a man in years, I’ll fuck you in the toilet before desert. Her size, dwarfs him. Her pimply flat arse shakes with every shameful thrust. She reveals she has birthed six children. Her pelvic floor is weak”. All of the lyrics are certainly offensive typically misogynistic, but lack that truly hateful, ‘these dudes really have issues with women‘ -vibe that bands like Whore put off.
Of course, these artful vignettes are indecipherable due to the genre standard burps and growls, but you get the idea. Musically, the band isn’t doing anything I have not heard from any brutal slam death metal band, but they are on par with the likes of the recently released Kraanuim.effort and of coursem the genre measuring stick , Devourment. The slams are slammy, the blasts (thankfully free of pitter patter snare sound) are blasty and the vocals are pig squealy. Tracks like “In Loving memory”, “Human Error”, “DPI”, “Bittersweet” and “Voyeurism” are all pretty bog standard stuff, but done with enough competence and a slight tongue in cheek, cheekiness to make it enjoyable in its sub 30-minute burst.
