There’s been some pretty odd band names this year (Mutilatred, Dysrider, Famishgod, Meatwound, Neurotic November, Weak Aside). There has also been some fine old school Swedish death metal (Morbid Vomit, Wombath, Mass Burial, Entrails, Abscession, Infected Chaos, Skelethal, Feral, Cult of Endtime). Belgium’s Torturerama have the honor of being on both lists. However, it’s the second one they might sit atop of once the dust has settled on 2015.
I first heard about these guys and their debut album via a blog that The Black Dahlia Murder‘s Trevor Strnd wrote, listing 26 underground death metal albums you need to hear in 2015. And always curious to check out anything in the genre, I promptly checked them out and then ordered the album. Because is kicks all sorts of ass.
As with the band listed in the opening paragraph, this isn’t world changing next level death metal, go listen to the new Gorod album if you want that. However, if you crave musty, mid range old school HM-2 death metal, this is for you. It’s big, its burly, it’s catchy and it captures all of the best parts of the legendary tomes of Grave,Entombed and Dismember.
But if I were to make a direct comparison it would be Germany’s Revel in Flesh or Blood Mortized. The perfect song writing, energy, tone and delivery just reminds me of those two bands. So that’s to say this isn’t very original, but boy is it fun. Along with the perfect guitar tone, the riffs all have that classic musk that recalls the 90s Stockholm classics whether it’s “Don’t Incinerate the Dead”, “Revel in Disgust”, “Funeral Earth”or “Reduced to Fecal Splatter”, it’s all spot on and hugely satisfying for the genre and style with equal part d beat stomps, impish canters, huge grooves and earthy vocals.
Now, how about that band name……..
