The Dead are a death metal outfit that comes to us from Australia. This is a very short album with 9 songs in 29 minutes. If you are looking for something new and exciting then skip this one. To be honest I’m really not into this one at all as it slavishly obeys all of the conventions of brutal death metal. Gurgled vocals, check, slow material with a lot of bass, check, sounds like a total mess when it gets fast, check. The only touch you don’t hear all that much is the constant popping of the bass which gives this a somewhat funky nu-metal touch. This isn’t something to be encouraged, although it also reminds me a little bit of Blasphemy Made Flesh by Cryptopsy.
Don’t get too excited, there’s no “Open Face Surgery” on this album. As for what’s going on with the guitar I really can’t tell you as it’s buried in the mix. I can make out bits and pieces when the material is on the slow side but when they put the hammer down the album turns into an indecipherable miasma. However I give them credit, not too many bands set out to make a record that sounds like it was recorded underwater
