The Day Everything Became Nothing
Brutal

It doesn’t get more succinct than that title for the third album from Australia’s down-tuned, grind masters, The Day Everything Became Nothing. Plain white cover, 10 unnamed numbered tracks and 27 minutes of gurgling, groove filled, monstrously mid paced grindcore.

While admittedly this sort of stuff appeals to a niche audience that laps up the likes of Hymen Holocaust, Bile, Die Pigeon Die, Embalming Theater, Romperomp, Last Days of Humanity and Cock and Ball Torture, I tend to like TDEBN over their peers, ‘cos I just enjoy a solid, ultra thick guitar tone and simple groovy riffs, unintelligible, gurgles and burps be damned. Sure. A few blast beats worm their way into the fray (“1”, “5”) but ultimately Brutal is as heavy and pounding as being tea bagged by King Kong. None of the songs really stick or stand out but rather coagulate into one 27 minute groove. Not happy, rock ‘n’ roll grooves like modern Blood Duster but a tribal, primal and Steam train paced rumble that’s effectively simple yet heavy.

It’s hard to convey an album such as this in words as they seem wasted on the sheer hefty simplicity of tracks like “3”, “6”, “7”, “9” and “10”. But that being said, its plodding pace and garbage disposal vocals are also what keeps it from being an album I’ll truly appreciate or revisit, but that goes for this style as a whole.

I don’t like gurgles, burps or pig squeals. Give me great vocalists like Rotten Sound, Napalm Death and Impetigo and I’ll be buying your album in no time.

Thank you for putting that King Kong image in my mind, Erik. Hahahahaha.
