2024 has been the year of the EP. I think I might have covered more EPs this year than in previous and that’s not a bad thing. They’re bite sized albums, five maybe six tracks; half an hour tops. Yet within those handfuls of tracks, magic (albeit a dark, blood soaked and decapitated rabbit) can happen.
Such is the case with Mammoth Grinder and their blistering EP Undying Spectral Resonance. After four full-length albums and four EPS, with some split EPS thrown in for good measure. This album is like a trip down memory lane to the Death Thrash days of the 90s when Massacre was releasing their eponymous From Beyond and Carcass were inventing Goregrind with Symphonies of Sickness and Reek of Putrefaction. Mammoth Grinder has taken the best of those worlds and vomited out such a viciously cavernous Death Metal EP that hits like a fucking hammer blow.
All of this comes together with Undying Spectral Resonance. Opening track “Corpse of Divinant” rumbles in on super compressed guitar tones that are simply crushing. It sports a dive-bomb solo reminiscent of those found on From Beyond, it’s a great way to start off this brutal bastard.
“Undying Spectral Resonance” the title track is another prime Death Metal track starting off with a little bit of a Carcass inspired opening riffing, this mean sonofabitch is a slow and methodical dissection of your eardrums, it rips open a dimensional hole when the solo kicks in with the speed right before tracks end. “Call from the Frozen Styx” provides a nice interlude of ambient crawling terror.
Chris Ulsh, Ryan Parrish, Andy Horn and Sebastian Phillips comprise this gargantuan band and they rage through the final two tracks “Decrease the Peace” and “Obsessed with Death”. The former being a grimy slog through the diseased underbelly of society through a barrage of deadly riffs and the latter being a hefty Death Metal creature out for the blood of the posers in the world of Metal.
I absolutely love Undying Spectral Resonance, hell, I love Mammoth Grinder for that matter. This is an immense EP, devastating in delivery and calculated like a ballistic missile; for the people who live for Carcass, Massacre, Incantation and General Surgery. Play this fucker LOUD!
