I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me? It really does seem quite fitting in the context of another release by NE Ohio sludge merchants Fistula. Is it possible that this is a harsher Fistula? Eh, probably not, but it’s pretty damn harsh. Even better is that the Loser EP is available in blue vinyl (100 copies, one of which I received), black vinyl (300 copies), and clear vinyl (100 band copies), each of which comes with a digital download code for you modern, tech-savvy types. What better way to celebrate the spirit-crushing holidays?
The best part is that if you already hate Fistula’s brand of seething we-make-Eyehategod-sound-like-a-Sesame-Street-soundtrack sludge crawl, insane paced crust romp, and lunatic-hardcore-by-way-of-Venom-on-meth, then you will stab yourself in the eardrums over this sucker. And that’s why we love Fistula! Making your way through this EP, you’ll revel in a seven-minute steady-beat crusher that explodes into blast beating goodness called “Picking Up Chicks,” a 26-second freak-out called “I’m Glad Nate’s Not in A.C.,” and the two-beat mashing of “The Hounds.” Comfortably covered in filth by now, you’ll dive right into the awesomely titled “Mutant Tooth,” a tempo varied bout of mental illness, complete with the whirring noise effects/samples of Jesse Kling. The three-minute title track goes equally ape shit between mid-tempo incineration and psychotic speed addling before it all wrap ups with the seven-minute “Coma Forever,” which offers up a little bit of everything you just heard, something like a hammer-to-skull reminder for the ADHD brain. You deserve it. You really do.
Be afraid, be very afraid. That’s the way Fistula likes it and the devoted are thankful for it. Loser is here to cleanse you of any last bit of decency to which you’ve been clinging for all those years of acting like you’re better than us. You ain’t.
