While I’m not totally loving Dimentianon’s (formerly known as The Forgotten) form of chaotic, garage blackened death metal, I can appreciate its DIY delivery and primal intensity for what it is. This should appeal to fans of Goatwhore and Hellhammer mixed with Mayhem/Darkthrone or demo era Anaal Nathrakh, with maybe a splattering of retro underground 90’s US death metal (Godless Rising and a lot of the Pathos Productions stuff comes to mind).
Apparently 4 years in the making, the sound on Hossanas Novus Ordo Seclurum is expectedly primal but listenable. The vocals of M are spiteful shouts, not typical of black metal and the guitar tone is crusty and atonal. The music itself is grim, caustic and unforgiving with nary a note of warmth or polish, but it never rises to the level of pure US black metal. However, after the three bitter opening tracks (“Your Flesh Is Mine To Exploit”, “Terriblis Est Locus Iste”, “Bloodshed From A Black Rose”), Dimentianon suddenly deliver a slow, almost atmospheric and melodic number in “To Be Crowned King And Stabbed To Death” and then a cover of “Human Rot” from doomsters Rigor Sardonicous (who Dimentianon have several ties with), but this track actually sounds like a original Dimentianon track instead of crawling doom and blends seamlessly with following tracks “Dawn ov Shadows” and “Netzach” which both feature some brief synths and doom,/death sounding segments. Then you get the full on crusty lurch of “Azrael” and 23 minute (including lengthy mid song moments of silence) closer “To Return That Which Is Above To That Which Is Below”
Hossanas Novus Ordo Seclurum is a pretty niche release like most from Non Compos Mentis and Paragon (i.e. Satanic Funeral, Rigor Sardonicous), so I can’t whole heartedly recommend it to everyone, heck I probably won’t even return to it now its reviewed, but this is definitely for folks that like their metal raw and strictly underground.
