Dethklok
Dethalbum II

*rambling rant mode ON*

I like the band, I like show, I like this album, I like the first album – fuck off. Sure it’s a matter of tastes, but to not see the humor in this means you’re either a completely humorless fuck, or take yourself and metal in general way too seriously. I don’t get how someone couldn’t laugh at a song like “I Tamper With Evidence at the Murder Site of Odin” or “Dethsupport” with lines like “your guts explode as you erode/you broke the code the riddles solved/you made the trip/you have evolved/you’re the eclipse/you are a god” from the former and “to keep me alive is costing me/national deficit times three/there’s no way to avoid this fee/please pull the plug and kill me/it’s costing too much/pull the plug” from the latter. Even if you don’t like the style of metal they play, it’s executed well and it’s still funny. Creator Brendon Small is also to be admired for his knack for creating cheesy epic guitar leads in songs like “Black Fire Upon Us” and “Volcano” – it’s so cliché it can’t be anything but awesome – and that’s where the show and the music excel, is in nailing and laughing at every cliché and stereotype about metal and metalheads possible, and it’s fucking funny. Then on top of that, there’s the ridiculously awesome drum performances from the one and only Gene Hoglan. Just look at his mind boggling display of double bass all through “Laser Cannon Death Sentence”, easily the best Dethklok song yet, and flat out one of the best songs I’ve heard all year long – it just flattens me every time I hear it. But of course, instead of due praise, in oh so predictable metalhead fashion, the kvlt, br00tal, underground elite cast the show and band off as a terrible joke. “Oh, it’s popular, I HAVE to hate it!”. Ridiculous. It’s one thing to simply not like it because it’s not your thing, but to shit talk and label it as “untrue”, “fake”, etc, is retarded – it’s supposed to be humorous, not a serious metal band to be endlessly slobbered over. Get over yourselves and laugh a little bit. Now I’m sure I’m going to be labeled a “fucking poser” who likes “kiddie metal”, but that’s OK, I don’t give a fuck – eat shit.

LOL! Easy Larry. Calm down bud.

    Funny review!

the music is entertaining but I don’t like the show for one reason: I don’t find it funny. to be fair I’ve only watched 5-6 episodes but I think I only chuckled once in that whole time and no LOLs to be had. And I have a stupid sense of humor too. So Metalocalypse has brought me nothing but disappointment thus far – mostly because I really want to like it

I am not one for joke music, period. It ruins the experience for me. So, this just isn’t my thing, but I am also in the camp with Gaba. The show does nothing for me.

I’m with Larry – Me likey.

    Is it original? No.

Is it fun to listen to? You betcha.

Brandon Small has done a heck of a job again creating music that is brootal, entertaining and technically interesting. The vocals are much better this time, and whether or not you like the show, the album stands on its own as a pretty decent melodic death metal album.

And Gene “freakin” Hoglan, for gosh sakes. I’ve heard other folks complain that his drumming on these albums is contrived and boring. Really? Are we listening to the same albums? C’mon!

There’s some great stuff on this album, and if the “critics” dismiss it as a joke, without even listening (which I’m pretty sure they do), they are missing out on some great tuneage that’s fun to listen to.

Haven’t seen Metalocalypse yet but this is pretty good musically while the vocals are average at best. A curiosity for fans of the show or Hoglan completists imo.

“LOL! Easy Larry. Calm down bud.

That’s more or less what I was going for, was a few laughs, and to get some shit riled up – depending on which camp you fall into. So far it doesn’t look like anyone is biting from the other. I also thought it would be nice to break the mold and do something different for a ‘different’ kind of band.

Never seen the show, never heard the band. Gene “The Atomic Clock” Hoglan (his offical nickname..not ‘freakin’) rules.

The Atomic what? Oh, clock. Right… :)

I still find it hilarious that the best selling death metal album of all time is the first Dethklok album. And the fact is, even though the music is intentionally filled with just about every cliche you can find and dialed up to 11…it’s better than a lot of so called “serious” melodic death metal. And yes, “Laser Cannon Deth Sentence” is sheer awesome.

The music business needs all the help it can get. A friend of mine at a label was upset that a ‘fake’ band was stealing the thunder of ‘real’ bands but look at it this way…thousands of people got to see Soilent Green last year that would NEVER have gone to see them if they weren’t opening for Dethklok.

Plus the live band with Keneally, Beller and Hoglan is just nuts.

Not quite as good as the first “Dethalbum” (which is a masterpiece) BUT “Laser Cannon Deth Sentence” is one of Dethklok’s best songs…period.
