Deprecated were a band who featured bassist Derek Boyer (Deeds of Flesh, Disgorge, Decrepit Birth) before he joined Suffocation, and now reunited, the band now features Terrance Hobbs (Suffocation), Matt Sotelo (Decrepit Birth) for this, the rerecording and rereleasing of the band’s sole release, the 1998 EP, Deridng His Creation.
And a scorcher it is. With Zach Ohren’s re recording, these 4 tracks absolutely destroy, regardless of the 15 year old material. Original vocalist AJ Magana (ex Defeated Sanity) returns to the fold with a classic monotone, guttural roar and the end result is pure Suffocation styled brutality of the highest order. Which makes sense as back in 1998, Suffocation were actually on hold (ironic that Hobbs has joined the fold- a foreshadowing of Suffocation’s status?), but their influence can be heard on this material as well as the likes of Dying Fetus and Boyer’s other bands. This is brutal, pinch harmonic, slam filled, brutal American death metal and sounds great even almost 20 years later.
Each of the four tracks “Deriding His Creation”, “Mentally Deprived”, “Realization of Betrayal” and “Induced Deception” make for 14 minutes of pure 90s USDM bliss, full of squealing stop start riffs, crafty, brutal blast beats and some thick, loping grooves. I can’t compare the sound to the original EP, but I am guessing it didn’t sound this huge, especially the bottom end which rumbles and resonates with menacing heft. New label mates Oblivion could stand to learn a thing or two about being this brutal and memorable. Classic stuff.

I reviewed this for you, but had not sent it in yet, I’ll ship it to the other site. The entire ep has been remastered, but only the bass and guitars were re-recorded. The vocals and drums were left intact, from when they were first recorded yrs earlier/frank
