Spewing forth from the same sick Dutch mind as Gnaw Their Tongues’ Mories, Migdal Bavel is the second album that Mories has created under this moniker and while still a sick, nasty record, its more of a black metal based record than the droning insanity of Gnaw Their Tongues.
And I say that very loosely as Migdal Bavel is still a nasty, disturbing, misanthropic record that will appease fans of Teitanblood, Portal, early Anaal Nathrakh, Ayat, Impetuous Ritual, The Beast of the Apocalypse and such as it’s a 37 minute foray into hellish noise that just happens to be more tremolo pick based, but still no less atonal or caustic than the aforementioned bands.
As with any band of this ilk mentioned above, its really beyond mortal literary description to dissect each track and the ritualistic interludes (“The Ruins of Copan”, “Evocation of the Gallu”) as they blend into one truly disturbing experience rather than actual songs. Only “Curse of Cannan” and “Zaota” seem to have discernable structure, and even then its still a caustic, scrawling mindfuck. “Zaota” (and the disgusting shimmer of closer Rapture”) initially culls from Blut Aus Nord with a tremolo picked dissonance and even some slight synths, but it soon reverts to the likes of sickly crawl and blast of “Below The Altar Of Ra-Hoor-Khuit”.
Whatever personal and psychological issues Mories has, I’m glad he has them as they result some of the most disturbing and disgusting vocals and music of the last few years.
