Formerly known as Epitasis, Chicago’s Carrion Throne is listed as a Doom/Death band on Metal-Archives, but after hearing this debut EP, I’m more inclined to list them as a more Brutal/Slam Death metal band more in line with Devourment and Wormed.
The 6 songs here (4 new songs and 2 demo songs from 2022) are a MASSIVE sounding lumbering death metal with some wonderfully hefty slams thrown in. The guitar tone is downright stoopid (and NO tippy tappy snare thank god) and vocalist Alex Corral shows him as an exciting newcomer on the scene with impressively low-end, powerful bellows.
Starting with “Misanthropic” and ending with “The Feast of Human Vices” the EP is controlled lethality never being too overly gurgly. It’s just the right level of near-perfect, pure slamming death metal heaviness, notably “Mazoku Mao” and the title track where there is enough variety amid the the crumbling heft.
The 2 demo tracks (“Descending Firmament” and “Sinning Tree”) sound a little different production-wise, though close. But the style and disgusting heaviness are present, and “Descending Firmament” does have a little moodier/doomy climax.
The Feast of Human Vices is a very promising debut EP and I’m looking forward to seeing what these guys can do in the US slam scene moving forward.
