Oh boy. Here’s one that’s going to get the metal heads’ hackles up and get my credibility absolutely shot. In theory I have no business liking this, it’s a Spanish band calling themselves ‘Flamencore’ and it mixes a ton of styles that I would usually despise; it’s got the bass heavy nu metal chug of Korn and Mudvayne, the super exaggerated drop bass breakdowns and vocal sneers of Emmure or Liferuiner, and then throw in some of the techno/dance/electronic elements of bands like Attack!Attack!, Eskimo Callboy and even Babymetal. Sounds like a complete shit show doesn’t it? But somehow it isn’t.
I can’t really explain why this does not make my blood boil like say Attila. Maybe it’s because they aren’t utterly obnoxious or maybe because they have some actually decent songs. Maybe I’m getting more accepting in my old age? Regardless, Dualitas has some moments that make me lose my shit in my car. The End Studios/TMF Studios production/mix is heavy as all get out, making the many many bass drops absolutely devastating. Yeah it’s chock full of techno laced squeal/chug/squeal/gradually getting louder vocals and jumdafuk up breakdowns (“Ahora Mando Yo”, “This World”, “Dualitas’, “Juganda A Ser Dios”, “Hate Song”), but I’m still digging it.
Amid the plethora of bass drops and screams, there is the expected ballads (“Eternidad”, “Ups and Downs”) and some fun little guilty pleasure techno/dub step/ dance romp moments (“Dance Core Party”, “Love Song”), that fans of Beyond All Recognition might enjoy. One gripe I have is the so called flamenco element- it’s simply not there- other than maybe “Haster Fellacer”, it’s non existent, and the Spanish in me was looking forward to something that introduced this unique ethnic element to the mix a little more. It could have been much more utilized and really given the album a little something more.
Admittedly a mix of Puya, Emmure and Attack! Attack! sounds awful on paper, but it somehow comes together, so like they say in the song “#shit”; ‘haters gonna fuckin’ hate’.
