Montreal progressive Technical Death Wizards Beyond Creation return with their third full length record Algorythm. The album opens up with a symphonic orchestration piece which is so similar to many that I almost wonder if it is even necessary. “Entre Suffrage Et Mirage” is strong enough track on its own. The musicianship of the string section is extremely well executed. The fretless bass work of Hugo Dayon-Karout is extremely well played and well mixed. I think of another Montreal band Augury and their recent release this year. With Augury you have a progressive tech death band that will still try to their technical roots branched out a bit into the soundtrack extreme metal sound. With Beyond Creation their death metal roots shine brightly throughout.
“Surface Echoes” is my favorite track on the album. The opening chord progressions are extremely jazzy and hypnotic. Most of the arrangements on Algorythm clock in between five to seven minutes so it definitely takes the right mindset to be able to sit through these arrangements. The title track, Algorythm clocks in at nearly eight minutes and is really quite mid paced. The really isn’t a lot of blast beat work on this album which I think is rather refreshing. The riff arrangements really drive the song structures and push the album forward.
“The Inversion” reminds me a bit of the band First Fragment. This is one of the tracks on the albums that is a bit blast heavy. It hard to knock this record but it is also a sound that is not for everyone. The closing track “The Afterlife” has some stellar harmony and tremolo dive work that segues into some driving double kick and Death/ Martyrish styled guitar work.
Overall, this is a solid album and work checking out if you have the patience for longer death metal tunes, top notch musicianship and fairly complicated song arrangements. Recommended for fans of Necrophagist, Cynic, First Fragment and Decrepit Birth.
