What do you get when Nachtmystium drummer and Cult of Daath vocalist/drummer Wargoat Obscurum takes a break for a side project? Alioth is an occult one man band formed in 2001 in order to compose occult atmospheric music in the style of legendary bands such as Varathron, Acheron, Master’s Hammer, and Rotting Christ. The debut Channeling Unclean Spirits was released in 2002 minimally, and re-released in 2007 by US Occult label/publisher “Starlight Temple Society” with a new layout and lyrics in anticipation of the recording of the follow up, Beneath The Swamp.

 Wargoat wanted an outlet for more mysterious and epic music, so he fired up his drum machine, yes, Wargoat, a drummer, used a drum machine, but promises real drums for the next release, and carefully crafted a few songs over the course of a few years. Work slowly, do it right, release it when it’s satisfactory. Can’t argue with the result. Great vocals, slow pace, aura of mystery, a Greek tribute band done right in the USA. Being a big Varathron fan of old, how could I not like this? The only question is is it black metal or is it death metal?

One thing listening to Channeling Unclean Spirits did do was inspire me to listen to a Varathron, Acheron, Rotting Christ marathon. Next year when I duplicate this marathon I will be adding Alioth to the list with hopefully two albums to enjoy.
