The year of the EP was 2024. Without a doubt I think I covered more Eps last year than any other in recent memories; granted that my brain is Swiss fucking cheese but whatever. Eps ruled!
Abschwörzunge has unleashed hell with its incredibly bleak outlook on humanity in sonic form with Whorl. It’s a dirty, desolate world that they reign over and through these four slabs of destroyer-level Blackened Death Metal, warfare has carved the population to dust.
The carnage begins with “Hideous Constellations” and it’s a brutal beating from the start. 9:32 worth of purity through savagery is the order of the day. There’s some brain drilling solos here; but ultimately the goal is to be as bloodstained and victorious as possible. The song boasts a to die for breakdown about 4:43 in with striding drums and piercing pinched harmonies.
The scorched earth policy continues with “Machinations Internecine”. The name of Zyklon-B is thrown hither and yon in the press release, and I can definitely hear the influences of Blood Must be Shed, but also more in the Samoth/Trym-helmed Zyklon and their blistering debut World ov Worms.
“Teeth of the Hanged” drags you into the trenches; where an overwhelming smell of death hangs in the rotten, polluted air. Soldiers with Mustard gas-filled lungs gasping for breath as they’re burned alive. It’s a slow-burning effigy to the ghosts of past wars.
The final track, the title “Whorl”… Is just that 10:27 of unhinged brutality. A hymn for the Apocalypse, purging the land of the human virus. There’s a small respite from the unholy blasting drums around the 8:06 point that’ll melt you into a puddle of powdered gore.
Abschwörzunge is shrouded in mystery (like any international cult should be). So there’s literally no information on who’s in the band, who really fucking cares? Those things can be revealed in due time. What’s in the here and now is Whorl and the future shall be uncovered. If you like Zyklon-B, Immolation or War; you’ll dig the hell out of Abschwörzunge!
