Teeth of the Divine 2015’s STAFF PICKS

2015. Another, goddamn, year over already. And how’d it end? With a major downer with Lemmy going somewhere else. Who do we have left? Ozzy? Rob? Alice? Anyone else? Damn. It wasn’t all that bad of a year though, even if the world seemed to become even crazier than 2014 — if Fox News is to be believed. Plenty of good music got released and what we’ve got here is a top list of metal related stuff that Teeth of the Divine’s staff handpicked themselves. Unlike most of our corporate overlords, we don’t outsource our opinions, enslave some poor bastards and build safety nets around them just in case they decide to call it quits. Actually, that’s not true. We’re not a hive mind, we enslave people to write for us but we sure as hell aren’t spending any of our huge advertising revenue to keep them alive. Ha! Anyway, browse around and find some worthy stuff you might have missed!

1. George Kollias – Invictus (Season of Mist) An absolutely masterful album from one of the best drummers on earth, but this is made more impressive by the fact Mr. Kollias handles the vocals and EVERY instrument on this beast
2. Gormathon – Following the Beast (Napalm Records) One of the catchiest albums I’ve ever heard, and the songs just burrow into my brain
3. Lost Soul – Atlantis: The New Beginning (Apostasy Records) Impressive symphonic-laced tech death album from a band to definitely keep an eye on
4. Solipsist – The Burning Mass (Ferocious Records) Nice death metal album with some very well done melodic singing thrown in
5. Black Tongue – The Unconquerable Dark (Century Media) Heaviest album of the year… or ANY year
6. The Killing Condition – Broken Down Morals (Amputated Vein) Awesome brutal death metal album fronted by the former lead singer of Wasteform
7. Putridity – Ignominious Atonement (Willowtip) Crushing, 300 mph brutal death metal done right
8. Lamb of God – Sturm Und Drang (Epic Records) Randy Blythe and company continue with their trademark style
9. Prion – Uncertain Process (Comatose Music) Killer tech-death from a band that keeps getting better and better
10. Tormention – Chaotic Delusions (Murdher Records) Phenomenal Swedish death metal that I am so glad I stumbled across

Continuing to age like a fine wine (regardless of the haters):
1. Slayer – Repentless
2. Iron Maiden – The Book of Souls
3. Fear Factory – Genexus

Brutal/Slam death albums of the year:
1. Dysentery – Fragments
2. The Killing Condition – Broken Down Morals
3. Putridity – Ignominious Atonement
4. Skinless – Only the Ruthless Remain
5. Hideous Divinity – Cobra Verde

Biggest disappointment:
1. All That Remains – The Order of Things This band is officially dead to me after another stinking whine-core turd heap, and it’s a stretch to even refer to them as “metal” any more

Guilty pleasure:
1. Disturbed – Immortalized One of the bands that got me into metal many years ago, and I still think Draiman’s voice is one of the best, and most unique, I’ve ever heard

I am a bit surprised (and saddened) to see the Sickening Horror mentioned only once, since this seemed to be one of the very few sites that actually reviewed it, and it got a pretty positive review at that.

Definitely some stuff I missed on these lists though so I will have to start digging through them.

I reviewed it here but didn’t submit a top ten due to extremely part-time status. But it was one of the few metal records I liked last year.
