Burial Invocation
Rituals of the Grotesque

One of Dark Descent Records’ other first CD-releases is the debut from Turkey’s Burial Invocation, and it’s a very promising―4 tracks and 18 all too short minutes―old school death metal that culls from many influences, but most heavily the likes of Bolt Thrower and a smidgen of classic old school Floridian death metal.

One only need hear the opening strains of the excellent third track, “Through the Void of Obscurity” to establish the Bolt Thrower influence, as the track could have come from any of Bolt Thrower’s middle/early (Realms of Chaos, War Master, The IVth Crusade) albums. Tumbling, haunting, controlled riffs down-tuned to menacing mid-paced rumble. The closing track, “Desecration Remains” has a slight hint of Bolt Thrower also, with some more urgent Floridian flourishes and a scrawling hint of Autopsy.

Funnily enough, it’s not till these last two excellent tracks that the Bolt Thrower influence and talent truly bleed through as the first two tracks “Beyond” and “Haunted Crypts of the Ancient Dead” seem a little more Florida inspired with more of an emphasis on Obituary and Incantation-ish moods (“Beyond” also has a nice little Autopsy-ish segment) ― though still very enjoyable and classic sounding without being an obvious retro or homage.

The production and playing is loose and natural but with a nice classic, earthy tone and vocalist Mustafa Y has the requisite old school cavernous growl (Nile’s vocals came to mind). It all makes for a very tasty little EP from a promising band who should be one to keep an eye on ― as well as this fledgling label.

In all, this EP alone is a pretty good reason to try you luck at our Dark Descent Records giveaway.

What exactly do you mean by “a scrawling hint of Autopsy”?

Great review. Despite our screwy catalog numbering, this was actually our first release back in Feb.

    Here’s our release/schedule:
