Disharmonia Mundi
Mind Tricks

Album number three from this highly underrated Italian Melodic Death metal band that features Bjorn ‘Speed’ Strid of Soilwork fame on vocals, and ol’ Bjorn has to be pissed that his little Italian side project blows his full time band out of the water.Yeah I said it. Disarmonia Mundi, and this album especially, blows (recent) Soilwork away. Armed with the expected polish of a Studio Fredman production, the band oozes refreshing, invigorating energy from every riff and synth line, and energy that Melodic Death metal sorely needs despite it’s familiar sound and feel.

The 10 tracks (and the rather nice cover of Pantera’s “Mouth For War”) glisten with confident, varied song writing that hearkens to Gothenburg’s classic era (early In Flames of course) and are licked with delicate futuristic synths, giving it a modern sheen. The expected mix of heavier, faster, urgent tracks like opener “Resurrection Code”, the addictive gallop of the title track, “Parting Ways”, and the absolutely ripping “Last Breed” blend perfectly with more introspective, restrained, mid paced numbers like “Celestial Furnace”, “Nihilistic Overdrive”, “Liquid Wings”, closer “A Taste of Collapse”, and all delivered with plenty of well placed, not overused clean vocal segues.

All tracks are top notch examples of modernized melodic death metal done pretty much perfectly and only one’s aversion to the genre or some clean vocals would make anyone not enjoy this very classy record.
Easily the second or third best melodic death metal album of 2006, as the Axamenta’s surprising new album is my current top choice.
