Sometimes I need a break from my symphonic addiction and shake things up a bit and get back to basics. Go back to my roots so to speak…how about some relentless, blasting blackened death metal from South Carolina???
Fuck yes.
And Olkoth ( a deity from the Cthtulu mythos) with current and ex-members from various acts like Lecherous Nocturne, Raphumet’s Well, Xael and Enthean fucking delivers the goods on their debut….in spades.
With dashes of Angelcorpse, Morbid Angel, Nile, a large heap of Hate Eternal, and of course, Lecherous Nocturne (and to these ears fellow southerners Chaos Inception) Olkoth spews out 35 blistering minutes of no-frills death metal, with a very slight blackened edge.
The mix/master from veteran Ronnie Björnström (Aeon, Paganizer, Ribspreader, etc) is punishing as all get out making the pretty relentless offerings hit even harder from opener “Alhazred” to the closing title track.
The pace is pretty frenzied from start to finish with tracks like “Allhazred”, “Incendiary Prayer”, “Thousand Faced Moon”, “Eidolon in the Flames” or “Lords of the Kai Yuga” absolutely tearing your face off (“Kali Yuga” in particular). But as with most good death/blackened death metal, there needs to be a respite, and Olkoth has a few more controlled but still destructive militant marches thrown in such as “The Resurrectionist”, “Thousand Faced Moon” and “To East of the Lotus” having a definite later Hate Eternal aura about them.
Everlasting Spew is on fire of late with the Birdflesh return, the Maze of Sothoth, and this incendiary little number and continue to become a solid international label.
