I have to admit I’m a little bored of brutal death metal. Especially the stuff Comatose puts out on the regular basis; gurgle, squeal, rape, cunt, gore, blast etc. I mean I don’t dislike it, there is a time and a place for it, but the last album they released that remotely stuck with me was 2018s Slaughter Monolith by Abhorrent Deformity. And they released at least 30 albums since then, many of them enjoyed by fellow writers here.
So I thought I’d at least check out something recent, and the debut from Chile’s In Asymmetry caught my eye as the band wasn’t called ‘Gorecunt’ and the album wasn’t called ‘Drowning in the Putrid Semen of the Raped’, or something like that. Also, drummer Darren Cesca of Deeds of Flesh, Eschaton, Pillory and many others help out here as well as vocalist Taylor Wientjes formerly of The Faceless, and Inanimate Existence. And certainly while still very much an expected Comatose release, there is a little more depth here.
And certainly, modern Deeds of Flesh is a solid comparison here (as well as Inanimate Existence), heck, the album even ends with a cover of “Sense of the Diabolic” from 1999s Path of the Weakening album. The overall sound and themes are far more tech-death than pure brutal death metal. Founder and guitarist Victor Araneda knows his way around tech-death riffs, has the standard growl (not overly gurgly) and of course, with Cesca’s backing, it all hits hard and fast.
That said, this isn’t groundbreaking tech-death or an adventurous Obscura twang or playful Gorod type stuff, but a direct tech-death assault from start to finish. There’s an atmospheric intro to start the opening title track, a short outro to “To Him Be the Glory Forever and Eve”, a brief acoustic part in “Forged by the Ancient Entity”. There are some nice, but infrequent slower chugs here and there too (“In My Own Image and Likeness”, “Emancipation”). But it’s mostly an impressive, swirling, tech-death vortex as heard above in “Hatred Towards the Holy Creature” or “Ashes of Dead Worlds”.
Comatose hasn’t fully reeled me back in with this release but they certainly set the hook, so lets see what the rest of 2021 brings….
