Necrocrosm is a curious one for me. When I saw the promo sheet and read the bio and saw the artwork, both got me interested in them and I decided to give them a listen. I was impressed on the onset with the sound, in which you can hear all members and even the bass player for the most part, if you really listen and along with the drums, great interplay between the instruments. A rich guitar sound that is up front in the mix and helps the melodic elements to shine.
Listening deeper I was getting touches of Brutality (Fla) with the vocals and the guitars maybe even a touch of Revocation but less tech and more melodic. The vocalist switches between semi low gruff vocals and higher pitched screams and some shouting, which is good to add some variation in the approach and not just be one dimensional. But as the album progressed there was a couple of nagging elements actively cropping up through the songs as the album progressed. I kept getting reminded of certain metalcore bands at different points. Not a bad thing for some and being that I am not a great fan of that genre, I guess this weighed on me. Also the things started to get bit samey sounding, where songs all sort of blended into one another. None of which are deal breakers because the band can play and it was fun to hear the trading of notes between guitar and bass and some of the melodic death riffing make your ears perk up on occasion.
So like stated, for myself, I am curious to hear more from them down the line, this being the bands first release, I get to wondering will they go the path of darker death metal (which some of the lyrical content and merch may give one to think) or will they further embrace more of the melodic ( and that “other” ) sound and maybe be more accessible? All in all not a bad release and I’m sure some will enjoy it even more so than I. Give it a listen and decide for yourself.

I’m getting the distinct impression they’re going to move more in the direction of As I Lay Dying or Killswitch Engage. They’ve got something interesting going on, though, that leads me to hope that maybe, just maybe, they’ll pull a Horrendous and unleash a stunning second release that will leave our collective jaws on the floor.

on Dec 19th, 2015 at 11:56If anyone still cares we are only going much darker and more technical on the next album.
