So Vomitory broke up in 2013 after one of the most consistent yet unheralded death metal discographies to ever come out of Sweden. But 3/4 of the band ( drummer Tobias “Tobben” Gustafsson, guitarist Anders Bertilsson, and vocalist/bassist Erik Rundqvist) are back under a rather uncreative new moniker, Cut Up. I’m not sure what you are expecting from a band that’s 3/4s of Vomitory, but thankfully yes, it sounds like Vomitory.

That’s probably all prospective or curious buyers really need to know, but i suppose I should elaborate somewhat to fill this page up a little more, right?  Aided by Fetus Stench‘s Bjorte on vocals/guitars, Cut Up’s delivery is the same American based (think Malevolent Creation, Divine Empire, Hateplow), slightly grindcore based take on death metal that, as with Vomitory, eschews the more typical standard Swedish sound and tone.

The material fluctuates between  thick grooves ( “Brain Cell Holocaust”, “Order of the Chainsaw”) and short bursts of fierce thrashing, d beat, slightly punk/grind inspired fury that’s surprisingly catchy as signaled effectively by opener “Enter Hell”, “A Butchery Improved”, “Camoflesh” and most of the albums other tracks . It’s got a brawny, beefy  guitar tone that has a slight hint of the band’s Swedish/mid range, but never forces any sort of mid range over dose, but just stabs and slices with confidence in the song writing alone, as you’d expect from a collection of veterans. Just tell me closer “Dead and Impaled” isn’t about a perfect death metal tune that does both groove and blast to a bloody tee.

There’s not much more to elaborate on really. Cut Up, as Vomitory were, is top notch, no nonsense satisfying death metal that every death metal fan should check out.
