Demon Lung
A Dracula

I am one for concept albums especially when they revolve around late 1970’s Horror Films and that is exactly what Demon Lung’s A Dracula is. Produced by Billy Anderson (Neurosis, High on Fire) A Dracula has a fantastically heavy and sludgy production.  I was not too familiar with Demon Lung when I choose to do this review and I guess an analogy I could make would be if Royal Thunder was more on the hard rock blues side of female fronted releases the last few years. Demon Lung is way darker and I don’t want to say like Black Sabbath because the guitar work is way more involved but this is a really awesome record.

Formed in 2011 Las Vegas’ Demon Lung is perfect fit with Candlelight Records. They have created a very focused performance with A Dracula tracks like “Behold, The Daughter” that happens to be about the Daughter of Satan.  I could see a band like Demon Lung doing a split with a band like Ghost.  The Guitar work on “Gypsy Curs”e reminds me of Ghost heavier guitar work though.

Demon Lung is definitely not a band I would recommend to a fan of Nightwish or Within Temptation but I would say that if you are into heavier dirgier doom/death you would probably be pleasantly surprised with A Dracula. The instrumentation overall is incredibly solid and this sounds like it had the proper amount of time put into the tracking where I would say that this is one of better concept albums that I have heard recorded in a while.

I would recommend A Dracula to anyone looking for a dark heavy metal record with dark female vocals but not grim vocals.  Again, Demon Lung is not for everyone but if you into Metal as much as I am and the writers of this staff are then you should at least check out a song or two by Demon Lung.  There elements to this that feel like doom and there are elements to this that feel more on the sludge side.

Demon Lung have put together a solid record of 44 minutes of bloodthirsty storytelling.  If you are a fan of Royal Thunder and want to check something similar in a way more hellish and horror inspired then Demon Lung is the group for you. Like Royal Thunder, Demon Lung clearly are ambitious and methodical in their approach to their craft and this is a group that is one that I will be watching throughout this year and into future release and tours.  Keep in an eye on these children of the night.
