Cognizance
Inquisition EP/2014 Demo

Cognizance is a brutal technical death metal duo from the UK.  Their 2013 debut release was a 4 song ep that the record label just sent me and my god this is some of the best and most memorable tech-death metal music you will hear.  The ep features some guest musicians, with The Faceless drummer on this.  The music on here reminds me a bit of the first Faceless album, as well as Fallujah.  The production is perfect and all the instruments sound powerful and crisp.  “Clones of the Night Sky” kicks things off and is unrelenting in nature.  Nice rhythm section with outstanding bass lines and I like the bass bomb drop at the 2 minute mark.  “Defying a Natural Process” has a dreamy/spacey feel to it at about a minute and a half into the song, before erupting into a killer thrash beat, before slowing down again.

This is the limited edition numbered digi-pack that comes with lyrics too.  There is no booklet insert in the digi- so make sure you have a plastic sleeve enclosing the digi-pack or you will lose the booklet.  I want to point out that these guitar riffs are so incredible and memorable that this is a must have 4 song ep.  Inquisition is brilliant music.  Buy or Die!

After the scorching 2013 Inquisition ep above, Cognizance has returned with a 2014, 2 song promo that I believe the band could be shopping around in order to obtain a record deal for their debut album.  More guest musicians on this with Necrophagist drummer, Romain Goulon providing the killer drumming this time around.  The production is even better than their ep and “Assemblage of Ancient Authority” opens up with a brutal blast beat that goes into a groove, before going back into a blast.  I tell, you, just like the ep, the tempo shifts that Cognizance conjure up really make them stand out from a lot of the other tech death metal bands, I love it!  The song has some ferocious double bass drumming, with parts coming across similar to Hour of Penance, in terms of sheer brutality.

“Deep Geological Disposal” is up next with a real nice drum beginning, with outstanding guitar melodies and cool soloing.  A real nice slow part at the 2 minute mark with some killer double bass and a nice bass bomb groove fest that gets into a little deathcore territory, than going into more blast beating.  Vocals are powerful mid range and you can make out the words.  I am telling you, record labels out there, get off your asses and sign Cognizance at once so they can unleash their debut album that will crush the weak.  Outstanding band! Interview forthcoming…be on the lookout.
