Ossuary Anex is a brutal death metal band from Russia, so you know what to expect, since Russia is putting out some of the most vicious slam death metal bands right now.  My iTunes, when, I loaded the cd in, said it was a 2013 release, this was released pretty much on New Year’s Eve and took forever for U.S. distros to get it, I just scored it a few weeks ago.  Anyone can play fast and brutal death metal-ANYONE!  Thousands of bands pop up all the time, but it takes time to be able to develop a memorable sound.  Ossuary Anex has been around for 5 years and Awakening is their debut cd and I am loving this album, immensely.  Devourment comes to mind, when listening to this, a huge influence in both style and vocals.

The opening track, “Awakening of the Ancient Ones”, gets the ball rolling pretty quickly and it’s highly evident that the band actually knows how to write a song.  The stop/start blasting is really very catchy and there are great slams throughout the tune and cd, as a whole.  The 2.35 mark has some outstanding stop/start riffing and amazing bass lines.  Always excellent to hear bass guitars being mixed in properly and the bassist, knows a thing or two about what he is playing.

A lot of the brutal bands out there use triggers to enhance their sound and this album actually is a welcome to these ears, where the sound actually has an organic feel throughout the album.  It’s warm sounding, making the songs really shine and while the album has a great production it is not overly produced.  This is important to point out since the songs will stick in the listener’s head, a lot more and make this an album you will want to go back to again and again.

“When All Will Turn To Ashes” starts with a massive slam over some well done double bass.  I am telling you the 1.30 mark will make you want to start swinging and causing some pit chaos.  This part, no joke, as far as I’m concerned, is one of the best slam songs all year, from any brutal death metal band.  This track literally chugs along like some sort of mammoth bulldozer laying waste to city blocks, nationwide.  I’m surprised The Kremlin is still standing after this song is played.  The rest of the album has a multitude of slams, massive blast beating and vicious growls.

The cd comes equipped with pictures, liners, but no lyrics, which is a shame.  The cover reminds me almost of the pit scene, in the horror movie The Descent.  Some demon is in the front, with a mass of whirling dead bodies circling it, interesting to look at.  I wonder if the lyrics tie in to the covers, possibly, but gurgling vocals are tough to figure out sometimes.  Regardless, Awakening is a fantastic brutal death metal album that you need to get your hands on!
