As the big name bands continue to put out disappointing albums (looking at you most recently Blood Red Throne… I mean wtf?!?), it has allowed the underground to show where the action’s at. You can be forgiven if you’ve never heard of these Ohio broot-brewers, as it’s been almost 10 years since their last full length. But if you’re making plans for the weekend, and those plans include the need to have your face violently ripped off and boiled in a pot of human flesh, look no further than Documentaries of Dementia.
Following a far too long intro, the superhuman speed of “Pincushion Pussy” is out to get your attention, and get it fast. Blast beats attack from all sides, before a tasty sweep solo makes its presence known at the 25 second mark. What do we have here? Relentless brutality AND a healthy dose of technicality? Indeed you do. But don’t worry, as nary a minute later you get a nasty slam right from the depths of hell, before yet another slick guitar solo.
“Conceived for Incest” continues this hammer-fest, with another shovel-to-the-temple of an intro before slamming the throttle even further. Fans of Origin and Hour of Penance won’t be able to keep the smiles off their face (before it’s ripped off again of course). “Crack Whore Compost” shows the band continuing to expand with a more pronounced dual guitar attack, while never letting your blood pressure drop. “Icepick Ear Sodomy” and “He Wears the Flesh” both go over the 6 minute mark, further showing you can keep brains rattling all while writing good songs.
As you can probably guess by the artwork and song titles, they tend to focus on gore, rape, and violence against women (the latter being a lyrical choice I have never cared for and never will), so I wouldn’t leave this one on your desk at work. Drummer Jason Trecazzi is the star here, putting on an absolute track-show behind the kit, but guitarists Tony Tipton and Ben Deskins aren’t far behind, as they show brutal death metal can be much more than open chugs and power chords. Jimmy Javins has a death growl that fits this audible bulldozer perfectly, varying his pitch and placing the vocals in just the right places. I can’t recommend this one enough, and is likely my frontrunner for brutal death album of the year.

on Jul 9th, 2013 at 08:11you’re fine with rape, but not violence against women? what you meant (I hope) was “the latter two.”
on Jul 10th, 2013 at 06:16Ah good catch. Yes that is what I meant. Definitely want to be clear on that one.
on Jul 10th, 2013 at 11:39sorry, I wasn’t trying to be an asshole, I figured that was what you meant…
