Mikael Akerfeldt has returned to Bloodbath, and there was much rejoicing. However Dan Swano is gone now and that has had an effect on this EP moreso than Akerfeldt’s return.
While the vocals are an improvement over Pete Tagtgren on Nightmares Made Flesh, the songs themselves are missing something. As opposed to the early Morbid Angel/Entombed vibe their first three releases had, the material on this EP seems a lot more contemporary. The tempo is also way too fast because Martin Axenrot won’t stop blasting on the whole. The breakdown on “Blasting the Virginborn” is probably the highpoint of the EP.
Bloodbath was generally at their best with more midpaced songs such as “Eaten” and “Furnace Funeral”. The guitars are clearly Bloodbath in every sense, especially those weird riffs they throw in during breakdowns. The production is a bit too clean for my liking.
This is not a bad EP by any stretch, but it is lacking in old school nastiness and the constant blasting brings the whole thing far too up to date. This is probably their low point due to the relentless blasting; however this is still better than 75 percent of the stuff out there at the moment. However Death Breath has overtaken them in this department for now.

damn son you got short reviews anyways now i didnt hear this yet cuz i don’t really like them but when you said breakdown does that mean like heavy pit breakdown cuz you said it was the highpoint. just wondering.
on May 21st, 2008 at 19:27The breakdown was more of a slowdown from the constant blasting of the album. If it was a big mosh thing I would have hammered this album because I goddamned hate those. As for the short reviews, this was only 15 minutes long so the review wasn’t going to be an epic. Besides, even back at deadtide I used to generally get the reviews under 300 words. Unless I really love an album, then sometimes the review will get uncontrollably long.

on May 22nd, 2008 at 16:40I don’t think you give this album the credit it deserves. It may stray a bit from “old school” but the songwriting and overall intensity is amazing. One of my fav recent DM releases for sure.
