Easily one of the coolest reissues in recent memory, Horror Pain Gore Death Productions is kind enough to exhume the rotten corpse of the awesome Urine Junkies from the (sadly) defunct Abscess. Originally released way back in 1995 before the Bay Area sickos ever released an official full-length, Urine Junkies is a collection of their first three demos in reverse chronological order. Featuring all the tracks from Crawled Up From the Sewer and Abscess and all of Raw, Sick and Brutal Noise sans “Necroslut”, Urine Junkies is a death/grind/gore/punk whore’s dream, especially if you’ve never been able to unearth any of the original demos or the original pressing of Urine Junkies.
Sporting the trademark Abscess filth and disgusting aesthetics, this is arguably the band’s finest hour because it captured the band in their primitive, rawest form. Though they’ve certainly hit high marks with such classics as their debut full-length Seminal Vampires and Maggot Men and the awesome Tormented, this particular release just reeks of everything that made Abscess such a monster of a band.
But lest you think this is just a simple reissue courtesy of the blokes at HPGDP; this is anything but. What makes this resurrected version of Urine Junkies such a prize is that it’s been made available for the first time on vinyl. It’s a deluxe edition 12-inch picture disc but aside from the killer tracks found on the records, those who purchase this decaying carcass will be treated to a double-sided air freshener with album’s cover on it, a set of two goofy name tags and a pen that is designed to look like a syringe filled with urine. Easily some of the niftiest trinkets to be included in a deluxe package in quite some time, the limited run of only 500 copies is expected to go fast.
Aside from being one of the best collections of rotten deathpunk ever, the added paraphernalia that comes with the reissue of Urine Junkies makes it instantly worth every penny. If you’ve somehow missed out on this beast when it first came out, now’s your chance to enjoy Abscess in all their glory. What’s even better is that if you already own the CD or MP3 of Urine Junkies, the air freshener and urine-filled syringe pen put it over the top. It’s not perfect; we’d like to see the aforementioned “Necroslut” added to the reissue but beggars can’t be choosers, right? That gripe aside, this is an essential purchase.
