Absvrdist
Illusory

Hailing from Texas and featuring The Faceless drummer Lyle Cooper, Absvrdist play a form of vicious modern grind/crust that would sit well on Southern Lord. It will appeal to fans of  Enabler and any other of Southern Lord’s crust/hardcore bands, and it’s got just a dash of black metal (though that might just be the ‘v’ in the band’s moniker and a few black metal tropes here and there).

In fact, I’m reminded heavily of genre raping bands like Infernal Stronghold, December Wolves, Black Hole of Calcutta and early The Red Chord when Illusory is beating my skull in. It’s violent, seething and merciless. But it’s also very well done, as Absvrdist come across as a very seasoned, competent band. Not just a group of noisy, genre mashing scene kids with a side project.

With the exception for more experimental Converge-y 4.minute closer “Abstract Absurdities” and moody penultimate instrumental track “Brood”, the 15 songs (26 minutes) are all short 1-2 minute bursts of vitriolic, crusty violent mayhem with a skin peeling guitar tone more ‘real’ grindcore than some of their contemporaries, with a Rotten Sound matching fury and brevity here and there (“Shidiot”, “First World Problem”, “Needful Things”) . Throw in a few cool samples and appropriately feral vocals and tracks like “Exposure”, “Mindless”, “Delusion”, “Logical Conclusion”, “Funny Games” and the simply ripping title track are rumbling, grooving and grinding shitstorms of pure, snarling, sonic venom.

And while the band’s self-proclaimed black metal influence is a wee bit overstated—the opening tremolo picked riff of “Amongst Humans” and “Weakness” might fit—I’ll cut the band some slack, as all the material on display here is  simply awesome and does not need to be shoehorned into black metal at all. Anyway, quit reading my review and go do the bandcamp thing at the band link above and download/buy one of the best, most unrelenting self-released efforts to have shredded my ears this year that completely assfucks the new The Faceless album.
