Animals Killing People/Andromorphus Rexalia
Phylum Morph-Apokalupsis

Phylum Morph-Apokalupsis is an 8 song split CD between two of New York finest,  gurgliest, messiest, grinding death metal/goregrind acts. You get 4 from each (though one of Animals Killing People‘s track is a cover) and the only real difference between the 2 sets of tracks is a few members here and there (both bands share members with each other and the excellent Copremesis) and the lyrical themes. Animals Killing People is well, about animals killing people, animal rights and such while Andromorphus Rexalia has coined the term ‘cosmic grinding brutality’.

Distinguishing the two is initially impossible other than Animals Killing People‘s songs mostly start with some samples from horror movies about animals killing people (i.e. the rage infected monkeys at the start of 28 Days later). The only immediate giveaway are the song titles (“Mad Monkey Surgery” and “Human Hunting Season” vs “Cosmic Collision into the Fifth Dimension” and “Hidden Parallel Universe”)  as both have the same over the top indecipherable pig squealed, burped vocals, churning, chum-y riffs and a typically goregrind murky down tuned, but beefy production.

And while the genre and the style isn’t really choice for everyday listening, there’s no denying that both bands are masters of this kind of sloppy noise. The 8 songs by both bands are just heavy as all get out and render 22 minutes of nauseating (in a good way) , nastiness. None of the songs really stand out as the entirety of the release other than samples, is just an onslaught of a gurgling, burping, grinding salvo with a few insanely heavy , bowel opening grooves here and there. A cover of Masacra‘s “Tiempos de Guerra” by Animals Killing People slots right in between the to sets of songs, but only true fans of goregrind and the three bands in question could tell amid the sonic slaughterhouse on this release.

I’m just glad Phylum Morph-Apokalupsis is only 22 minutes as this level of regurgitating guttural extremity is meant for short bursts rather than extended listening, and thusly is a pretty perfect delivery of the style.

Bluuuuuuuuuuuuuugh-raaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrgh-uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurgggggghhhhhhhh-reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I totally agree with the last paragraph. Was it any longer, it would have been extremely tedious to sit through, but for short bursts of gurgling blasting brutality, this split has the perfect length.
