Power metal. Yup, power metal. But, no ripping off of Helloween or Blind Guardian, no screechy vocalist, and not a Tolkien reference in sight. Wyvern are definitely going for the majestic, “glory” vibe here in many places, but they come off heavier in some places as well. There are plenty of galloping kick-drum/guitar riff combos here, as well as a classic heavy metal feel with the “marching into battle” melodies and “gang shout” vocals.

It’s obvious that Wyvern’s goal is not originality, but rather doing what they choose to do with skill and conviction. “The Liquid And The Metal” is a slower tempo, headbanging number with an anthemic chorus and good guitar lead work. “Starborn” is the record’s token high-speed tune, albeit quite a good one. The chorus here borders on “happy,” but doesn’t get quite cheesy enough to turn me off. The lightning guitar licks under the chorus are quite impressive. The acoustic theme melody on the intro to “Defiance Of Fate” is very cool, leading into its electric counterpart. The chorus here is another “ships sailing into battle” type of melody, almost hymn-like.

“Like Dogs Climbing Up The Moon” wins the “Most Unusual Power Metal Song Title” award. This nearly 8-minute epic is the centerpiece of the record with its moving melodies, airy atmosphere, and dramatic ebbs and flows. It begins with a strummed acoustic refrain and the metal doesn’t kick in until around the 3-minute mark. When it does, though, it comes in full force with a fast, head-thrashing tempo and sweeping guitar melody-riffs. Vocally, there is a strong, mid-range tone throughout, which works quite well. He’s not a vocal-god, mind you, but he gets the job done right. I just wish other, more well-known power metal acts would follow suit and acquire a vocalist that does the music justice.

Whether you’re a power metal collector, casual fan or die-hard supporter, by all means grab No Defiance Of Fate. It’s probably better than half the other power metal in your collection.
