Review of Light Pupil Dilate - Snake Wine

Label: Lifeforce Records / Year: 2007 / Artist website

Ever wonder what it would sound like if the collective heads of Fugazi, Electric Wizard & Rush were nailed together whilst the bands tried frantically to tear apart from each other? No, neither have I. But lucky for us, thanks to Light Pupil Dilate, we don’t have to! Snake Wine delivers a solid slab of syncopated, melodic noise with more adrenaline-laced musicianship than you can shake a broken guitar at.

This is one of those records that easily crosses genre barriers. Fans of Stoner Metal, Progressive Rock, Indie Noise, Thrash Metal, Post Rock can all come together under the audio umbrella that is Light Pupil Dilate. From choppy, heavy riffs, to dissonant, ethereal guitar layers, to a jagged, caustic vocal delivery, Snake Wine is a solid, if varied, listen.

Another thing about these kinds of albums is that its nearly impossible to point to a particular song or songs as any sort of highlight or as definitive of the band’s sound. Without a doubt, Snake Wine is best taken as a whole experience, start to finish. If you’re looking for something more than a little left of center, look no further.
